Literature and Film

Parental Permission Sample

Dear Parent,

Your son/daughter is currently enrolled in the Literature and Film course, which is striving to help students become more visually literate and critical in their movie viewing, and we will be analyzing several films during the Literature and Film course. Many of these films were release prior to 1967 before the movie rating system came out while many of the post 1967 movies are rated PG, which causes no problem with the Tuba City Unified District's board policy.

Unfortunately, many of the more recent movies that are very highly regarded by film critics are rated PG-13 or R. Check your son's/daughter's textbook on page 51 for specific information on what these ratings actually mean for current movies. Standards for ratings have changed over the years; for example, a certain expletive uttered in 1967 meant an automatic R rating while today it may receive a PG rating if used strictly as an expletive.

I would like to be able to show a few of these more recent films since I feel that they are of a very high artistic quality and are very educational. The films llisted below are for your consideration (not all of them will be shown in the class). Please cross out any film you find objectionable.

Students will only be allowed to watch films for which they have a signed parental permission; they will not be allowed to watch a film that you have crossed out. Alternative assignments will be given to students without proper permission.

Please feel free to contact me with any specific concerns.

Sincerely,

J. Nesbit
